Pet Shop Boys: Fundamental

May 23, 2006

psbThree songs in and, though obviously not as strong an opus as Bilingual, this is a much better album than the previous two. Trevor Horn’s production proves that if you can’t grow old gracefully (as proved by the adult-contemporary soft rock of Release), you should grow old ridiculously.

This is gloriously, ridiculously, theatrically absurd pop disco. Thank god Neil has made peace with being a miserable old bastard. It’s finally working for him which it hadn’t been since Nightlife. If you’re going to be unhappy, you really have to own it.

And boy does he own it here. He and Morrissey should have a bitter old codger-off in Trafalgar square. I’m not sure what they’d do, exactly. But it’d be a well matched bout regardless.

I give Fundamental 4.5 out of 5 Chris Lowe scowls.
